Lash Lift vs. Extensions

Timing Commitments

Lash Lift : 1.5 hour appointments, can be re-done every 4-6 weeks or can be once or twice a year for special occasions like birthdays, vacations, parties, weddings etc.

If you fall in love with the natural look + low daily maintenance, and want to maintain it year round, then I’ll see you anywhere from 8-12 times a year total.

Extensions : first appointments can be 2-4 hours depending on style and artist speed. Must be re-filled every 2-3 weeks to avoid patchy look and those appointments are typically 45-90 minutes each.

Then they usually need to be fully removed and redone every few months taking another 2-4 hours. If you decide on the extension path, you’ll probably see your lash artist 20-26 times per year.

Lash Extensions also require daily morning and evening maintenance + restrictions on what kind of makeup routines and skin care products you may be allowed to use to maintain your extensions and lash hair health.

Daily Maintenance + Restrictions

Lash Lift : There are no restrictions on skincare, lash serum, oils, growth products, makeup, or other topical products. You don’t even have to wait 24 hours to get them wet anymore (hello Legally Blonde shower too soon after a perm defense scene!). I wouldn’t recommend going straight into a sauna or steam facial for the first night, but regular face washing, showering etc. is perfectly fine.

Daily maintenance is simply to wet your lashes with plain tap water in the morning if you wake up with them looking a little disheveled, and then to brush them out while wet with the clean mascara brush that I include with every appointment.

Extensions : You are not supposed to use eye makeup or mascara, certain types of lash serums, oil based eye makeup removers, or regular face wash to wash your lashes. You also have to wash them carefully twice a day with the special cleanser usually purchased through your lash provider.

Lash Hair Health Consequences

Lash Lift : I use a more gentle product line than we used to in the past, which takes a bit longer for the appointment but maintains the integrity of the lash hair itself. It is gentle enough that I used it on my 16 year old daughter’s lashes without worry. The lash health is stable and maintained and I have not seen any breakage or lash loss over time, even in my long term lash lift clients.

Lash Extensions : If they are done by professionals with good training and are not cutting corners or expenses, and if they are not clusters but are instead the fans that are individually glued to the single lash hairs, then there should be no issues or damage to natural lash hair from long-term extension wear.

However, adhesive and glue allergies can develop over time (same for lash tint products). And in clients with delicate or very fine lash hairs, extensions can put excess strain on the follicle.

Lash extensions that are not meticulously cared for morning and evening with the special wash and brush, can cause the lash line skin to develop anterior blepharitis which is essentially eyelash dandruff and can cause permanent damage to the hair follicles resulting in permanent eyelash hair loss.
